Choosing a Diving Mask
The two most
important factors when choosing a diving mask are perfect fit and personal
style preference. The main objective of scuba diving is, of course, actually
seeing what is beneath the surface of the water. A mask that doesn’t fit or one
that just isn’t comfortable can derail your whole diving experience.
Diving masks come
in many sizes and with a variety of nose pocket shapes. The shape of the nose
pocket is an importance consideration. The purpose of the nose pocket is to
protect your nose and to prevent the mask from fogging up during a dive. Be
certain that the nose pocket of the mask you choose is of the best size and
shape to be comfortable. It needs to fit exactly right...not to big...not too
small.
The ‘skirt’ on
the mask is of the utmost importance. The skirts are made using various rubber
substances. The best kind is made of silicone, however. Many times people are
allergic to rubber products and silicone is hypoallergenic. The skirt needs to
conform perfectly to the shape of your face.
The next
consideration is the strap. All masks come equipped with a strap from the
manufacturer. You man want to purchase a different strap, though. Straps come
in single or double strap designs. Most straps of either variety usually fasten
with a post-hole belt closer. There are new designs that feature slide lock
closures.
The style mask
that you choose is simply a matter of personal preference. Masks come in 1, 2,
3, and 4 pane styles. The 1-pane has only a single pane, of course. The 2-pane
resembles sunglasses. The 3-pane has a front pane and a pane on each side. The
4-pane has two panes in front and 1 on each side. Remember that the object of
scuba diving is to be able to see. Choose the style that is most comfortable
for you and the one that you feel that you can best see out of.
For those who
have vision that is less than perfect and are required to wear eye glasses or
contact lenses on a regular basis, custom masks are available that will have
your vision prescription in the front pane of the mask making it unnecessary
for you to wear your eye glasses or contacts when diving.
